My Sweet Pepper Land - one minute review

My Sweet Pepper Land (Drama, in Kurdish with English subtitles, 90 minutes). Written by Hineer Saleem and Antoine Lacomblez; Directed by Hiner Saleem; Starring Korkmaz Arslan, and Golshifteh Farahani.
After the end of Saddam Hussein's regin, a war-hero named Baran tries to bring law and order to a small town in the newly independent Kurdish region. Baran befriends a schoolmistress named Govend (whose presence in the town is as unwanted as his own) and together they stand up against greed and corruption in an otherwise lawless territory. While the gap between cowboy genre and Middle-Eastern culture might seem unbridgeable, it's this exact fusion of influences that makes the movie so spectacular. The untamed landscapes, the horseback chases, the forbidden love – all of these elements are coupled with an inspired soundtrack to make the most compelling Western I've seen in ages. Rating: Five Stars.
