Short Term 12 (Dramedy, not rated, 96 minutes). Grace (Brie Larson) and her boyfriend Mason (John Gallagher Jr.) work at a short-term foster care center. While Grace tirelessly cares for the teens in her center, she struggles to deal with her own problems – her pregnancy, her father's release from jail, and her trust issues. While this movie is a great showcase of Larson and Gallagher's talent, the real heart of the movie lies with the teen actors – Kaitlin Dever shines as the steely yet vulnerable Jayden, and the best moments involve the Keith Stanfield's character, Marcus, as he struggles with turning 18 and leaving the facility. The film balances comedy and drama with ease, and the script is poignant without ever venturing into after-school special territory. A gem of a movie. Rating: Five stars.
